The survival-map playbook

The genre lives or dies on pacing. Five passes, in order.

01
Sketch the hold
One defensible pocket, one obvious exit, and less build space than feels generous. If players can turtle in comfort, the map is already dead. Decide where the last stand happens before you place a single tile.
02
Waypoints & lanes
Number enemy spawns along the map edges and route each through named waypoints so waves converge from different angles. Keep lanes readable — players should learn the map's rhythm by wave three.
03
Waves are triggers
A wave is a TaskForce (what spawns), a Script (where it goes), a TeamType (how it behaves), and a Trigger on a timer. Loop them with escalating counts. Label everything — W3_DESO_EAST beats "Team 14" at two in the morning.
04
Balance in passes
Lock the economy first: starting credits plus a controlled trickle. Then shape the curve — players should nearly break around wave 3, stabilize, and nearly break again at 7. Test at minimum and maximum player counts; they're different maps.
05
Kill the dead air
Survival maps die from boredom, not difficulty. Cut any minute where nothing threatens. When in doubt, ship it to two friends and an observer — then submit it below.
